How to build a business

As seen in Penrith Star June 2007

WHEN Phillip Grueff left school at just 14, unable to read or write, he never imagined that he would one day be at the helm of a multimillion dollar building company. Last year, ARCS Building Group, owned by Mr Grueff and his wife Skye, experienced a growth of 1054 per cent, turning over $3 million dollars.

But until last Sunday, when the Grueffs were featured on Channel Nine's Your Business Success, their results hadn't really sunk in.

"It was a definite 'we've made it' moment," said Mrs Grueff. "Over 330,000 people nationwide watch the show and we were so proud to be out there putting Penrith on the map." After leaving school, Mr Grueff took up an apprenticeship with his father.

At 18, a fully qualified carpenter, Mr Grueff decided he wanted to work for himself. In 2002, after a few rocky years, ARCS Building Group was established as a one-stop solution for trade services. So far, they have provided building maintenance, renovations and shop fit-outs for clients like the NSW Fire Brigade, McDonald's, Coca-Cola and the University of Western Sydney.

Mrs Grueff says that a clear business vision and goals are the secret to their success "If you dream big, you'll find a way to achieve so set huge goals," she said. "It doesn't matter if they're unrealistic - just go for it."

"We also recommend a business coach to help set goals and keep you accountable to them." In the spirit of aiming high, the Grueffs have big plans for the future of ARCS. "Eventually, we would like to have an office in each state," Mrs Grueff said.

"We hope to open an office in Brisbane or Melbourne by 2008. After that, we've got our sights set on going global."
